Grey’s Anatomy ‘Shepherd’s In a New Era with a Heartbreaking Departure: Why This Could Be a Good Thing…

As a long-time devoted fan of ABC’s internationally-acclaimed medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, I’m no stranger to heartache, tragedy and tears. As any loyal viewer could tell you, the doctors at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital (formerly Seattle Grace, and Seattle Grace Mercy Death West), have seen their share of death, drama, dysfunction and despair. (In fact, I’ve recently been re-living all of it on Netflix.) While every character departure has come with a lot of feels, the most recent is sure to leave a McDreamy-sized hole in the hearts of many.

The 3rd Coming: Adam Lambert’s #GhostTown begins the Rapture of “The Original High”

We’ve been praying religiously to #ThePopGods for the time to pass quickly ever since Adam Lambert started teasing us with snippets and tonnes of glowing industry reviews of his new, Max Martin/Shellback produced single Ghost Town, his debut offering under Warner Bros. Records, and the day is FINALLY here!

rapture

Prepare yourselves, ladies and gentlemen, for the RAPTURE! Only the devout will ascend in to #PopHeaven, but don’t panic, you’re all likely to believe once you’ve heard this other-worldly, soon-to-be-SMASH.

First, I share my very first impressions of the track in tweet form, as I lay in my bed with the track on repeat last evening:

I’ve had about 13 hours to listen and think things over, and I think it’s safe to say that Ghost Town is everything the onslaught of early reviews has said it is, and more.

  • It is “BONKERS.”
  • It is a more restrained vocal offering from Lambert, but it does not lack impact, what-so-ever.
  • It’s a complete and total earworm, but while that description is often reserved for fluffy pop tracks that lack substance, Ghost Town is dark, broody and complex.
  • It does seem to owe some inspiration to the folk-EDM tracks of 2014 and Madonna albums before it. It does have deep house beats that are reminiscent of 1993 and work of recent artists like Kiesza. It *could* be compared to the tone of the X-Files theme. The best news of all is that while all of these things are true, Ghost Town actually sounds like NOTHING else out there in mainstream pop music right now, and that is why it will stand out.
  • These lyrics are dark, dramatic and will probably inspire many broody, attention-grabbing Facebook statuses from your most down-in-the-dumps Facebook friends. That said, they’re beautifully written and sit perfectly at home in the sometimes sparse and sometimes spastic sonic landscape Max Martin and Shellback have created here.
  • This track is ALL ABOUT DAT BUILD. It starts off airy and meandering, adding layers and intensity as the song progresses, but JUST WAIT FOR IT! After the second hook, the bridge goes balls out, with Lambert’s vocals soaring and climaxing with what might be the most glorious vocal performance of the word “Oh” that I can recall on record, before the chorus explodes in whistles and basslines once more to finish you off. It’s the most transcendant 15 seconds of recorded music I’ve heard this year, and for me personally, it’s the biggest payoff of the entire track.
