Judgement Day (Special Edition): Pop Heaven’s Top 100 Songs of 2012 (Part 4 of 4)

The time has come! Were about to reveal Pop Heaven’s top 25 songs of 2012! As this year’s chart comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the journey of actually compiling a year-end chart.

I started off with 188 singles that were released this year by popular music’s heavy hitters from all genres. Additionally, there were plenty of amazing non-singles this year, so I carefully selected the best of the best (hoping that they don’t become runaway hits in 2013 so I won’t regret including them this year) and added those to the pool as well.

From there began the surprisingly arduous task of trying to rank them all. I prayed day and night to the Pop Gods to guide me in my mission. Sometimes I found myself heartbroken to realize that a song I loved would be cut when it slowly slipped over the fine line between #100 and #101. Admittedly, there were many other terrific tracks this year that didn’t make the list.

As always, there were some oversights and there are a couple of flat-out mistakes that I wish I could go back and amend, but once it’s been published it’s Pop Gospel so it’s time to let go of regret and move on with our  top 25!

Pop Messiah’s Summer Hymns (2012 Edition)

A few weeks back I started making a playlist of all of my favorite tracks this summer. Most of them are recent releases, but a few are older tracks that never got the opportunity to truly be summer smash hits. I thought it would be fun to share them all with you. In the spirit of keeping things legal, I found a cool site called 8Track, which reports all plays to the RIAA to ensure that artists are collecting royalties, and though it’s not downloadable – you will be able to listen to the tracks whenever you like and there are purchase links embedded in case you decide you love any of our picks so much you just HAVE to have it for yourself!!

Judgement Day: Pop Heaven or Hell? – Marina & the Diamonds – Electra Heart

Forgive me, Dear Readers, for I have once again sinned.

Somehow I have yet to post my thoughts about Marina and the Diamonds sophomore release “Electra Heart”, despite having written a rather lengthy piece about it’s concept and marketing plan prior to it’s European release nearly three months ago.

In my defense, I have made multiple attempts to finish and post this piece and somehow just never managed to sort out my thoughts to complete it until now. Luckily, the album was released today (7/10/2012) in North America and since I happen to call Canada my home and native land, it’s only suiting that I post my thoughts on “Electra Heart” on the day it becomes available for purchase on my shores.

It seems that a frequent criticism of concept albums is that the music is overshadowed by the pressure to understand the conceptual context of each song, rendering a body of work “lost” in it’s own conceptual fog. Given that Diamandis has gone to such lengths to present the release as a concept album, even adopting an entirely new character & image, I feel the concept should be a significant part of the discussion despite the inherrent risk of this possibility.

Diamandis has discussed “Electra Heart” in great detail as a kind-of character study channeling four female Archetypes and telling a story about dysfunctional love, using elements of Greek  Tragedy. When analyzing the entirety of “Electra Heart” within the multi-faceted concept some may argue that it’s much easier to find fault in the project than if  you choose to disregard its concept and listen solely as a fan of pop music. In the name of fairness, I have decided to present my thoughts on the album within each of these contexts; it’s strength as a concept album and it’s strength as a body of what I believe to be rather brilliant pop music.

Marina & the Diamonds “Electra Heart”: Powerful Statement or Another Tarnished Jewel?

I don’t know about the rest of you out there but I find myself fascinated, perplexed and maybe even a little bit concerned by the direction of the music and the marketing campaign for “Electra Heart”, the upcoming sophomore release from Marina & The Diamonds (due April 30th, 2012 from 679 Recordings/Warner Music Group). Of course, I felt compelled to muse about my thoughts and concerns for your entertainment and hopefully for your enlightenment.

For those of you who are familiar with Marina’s latest (admittedly wonderful) musical offerings, I urge you to read on before assuming I’ve lost my mind. First, I present some background for those of you who haven’t been following or perhaps are not familiar with her previous work.
